🎣 Fish of the Month: THE ANGLERFISH

She grows her own lightbulb. That drooping stalk is a modified fin spine, and the bulb on the end is packed with glowing bacteria she farms. Small curious things swim toward the light. That is the last decision they make.

The male? About the size of your thumbnail. He finds a female, bites on, and never lets go. Eventually he fuses to her body and becomes a permanent set of gonads. ROMANCE!!

🦑 The Rest of the Crew

🦑 VAMPIRE SQUID (Vampyroteuthis infernalis)

Not a vampire. Eats marine dandruff. Turns itself inside out like a spiky umbrella when startled, and squirts glowing mucus instead of ink.

🐟 BARRELEYE (Macropinna microstoma)

Transparent head. You can see the brain. Its tubular green eyes rotate inside the see-through dome to look straight up for silhouettes. Nature made a submarine with a glass cockpit.

🐙 DUMBO OCTOPUS (Grimpoteuthis)

Flaps two ear-like fins and hovers over the seafloor 4,000 metres down. Swallows its prey whole. Objectively the most polite animal in the abyss.

🦣 FANGTOOTH (Anoplogaster cornuta)

Largest teeth-to-body ratio of any fish in the ocean. Its bottom fangs are so long it evolved sockets in its skull for them. Six inches of pure attitude.

‼ 5 ABYSS FACTS THEY WON'T TELL YOU ON TV

1. It is snowing down there. Always.
Marine snow: a constant drizzle of dead plankton, scales and waste falling from the sunlit world. It is the entire food economy of the deep.
2. Most of it glows.
Roughly 3 out of 4 deep sea animals make their own light. Blue-green travels furthest in seawater, so nearly everybody picked that colour.
3. Red is the new invisible.
Red light never gets that deep, so red animals are effectively black. Shrimp down there are the colour of a fire engine and nobody can tell.
4. The pressure is a piano on your thumbnail.
At the bottom of the Mariana Trench it is over 1,000 atmospheres. The fish are fine. They just do not have any air in them to crush.
5. We have mapped less of it than the Moon.
The abyss is the largest habitat on Earth and we are still finding new species with almost every dive.
